Lindsey Wilson football looks to build on most successful season yet

COLUMBIA, Ky. (BVM) — Lindsey Wilson College isn’t shy when it comes to throwing their name in the spotlight of college football debate in Kentucky. When a tweet declared that Western Kentucky had the most wins by a team in the state since 2013, Lindsey Wilson College football replied with a hard and swift retort.

The fact that Lindsey Wilson has won 67 games over the past seven seasons is a testament to head coach Chris Oliver and his coaching staff’s ability to get the most out of its program. Helping start the program from scratch in 2010, Oliver has been able to establish the Blue Raiders as one of the best teams in the NAIA. In his 10 seasons at the helm, Oliver has won over 80 games, led the Blue Raiders to the NAIA playoffs five times and has been named the Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year three times. Although he has had a tremendous amount of success since jumpstarting the program, Oliver’s 2019 team may have been the best yet.

Last season, the Blue Raiders won their third Mid-South Conference title after going 7-0 in conference play enroute to an undefeated regular season where the team went 10-0. The Blue Raiders continued their winning ways in the playoffs, winning their first game against Saint Francis (Ind.) and upsetting then No. 3 ranked Kansas Wesleyan on their way to the program’s first NAIA FCS Semifinals appearance. Although the team would fall to No. 2 ranked Marian (Ind.), Lindsey Wilson would end the season ranked No. 4 in the NAIA in the league’s Coaches’ Postseason Top-25 Poll, its highest ranking to end a season in program history.

Led by NAIA First Team All-American junior running back Jaylen Boyd and Mid-South Bluegrass Division Player of the Year and NAIA All-American honorable mention quarterback Cameron Dukes, the Blue Raiders offense was a force during the 2019 season. Averaging 40.5 points per game and over 444 yards a game, the Blue Raiders finished in the top 10 in both categories while finishing 11th in passing yards per game with 278.3. The defense wasn’t far behind, finishing the year 15th in scoring defense surrendering only 18.4 points per game while also only surrendering 337.8 yards per game.

In February, Lindsey Wilson announced its latest recruiting class which introduced 48 new Blue Raiders members.

“This is a great day for the Blue Raider football program,” Oliver said. “Our assistant coaches have put a lot of time and effort into this group of young men, and we’re really excited about what lies ahead for this class. The future of Blue Raider football is very bright.”

With COVID-19 still impacting the way college campuses and their sports programs conduct their business, Lindsey Wilson football has taken the unprecedented change in stride. Living by the motto “Make a Way,” Lindsey Wilson’s coaching staff has tried to navigate its way into the new year with a positive attitude and through leading by example.

With its best season now in the rearview mirror, Lindsey Wilson is looking forward to the next chapter in the program’s brief, but successful, history. Living off the idea of going 1-0 each week, the team will look to extend their success into its next decade. With the way the last decade went, it is no surprise Lindsey Wilson football asks for more respect from its Kentucky football counterparts.
