Coach Brett Shanklin looks to further success at Frontier Academy

GREELEY, Colo. (BVM) — Brett Shanklin has had his hand in Northern Colorado distance running for the last 11-plus years.

Shanklin started off his coaching career at his alma mater, Mountain View High School, where he also ran cross country and track. After gaining some experience, Shanklin was able to move up in the ranks of the local distance running coaching scene. Shanklin was an assistant for Fort Collins Track Club, the Boulder Striders and Greeley West High School until in 2009 when he landed his first head coaching job with the CARA track program. In 2011, Shanklin launched a high school cross country team at Frontier Academy in Greeley where he has remained since, largely due to his success with the program.

In the time Shanklin has been at the helm of the Frontier Academy cross country and track programs, the boys cross country team has won two state championships and been the state runner-up three times and both boys and girls teams haven’t lost a Colorado State Region 4 championship since 2012. To go along with these team accomplishments, Shanklin has also won several awards. This past year, he was awarded the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) Class 3A Boys Coach of the Year as well as being named by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Boys Coach of the Year.

One of the reasons for Brett Shanklin’s long tenure of success is due to the philosophy he tries to instill in each of his athletes. Shanklin strongly believes in using motivation mixed with good training that is tailored to each individual athlete to get the individual to overcome obstacles. Shanklin, with help from past teams, has also built a resilient team culture that makes the hard training days worthwhile.

With the 2020 cross country season now upon us in Colorado, Shanklin and his Frontier Academy Wolverines will look to prove themselves and continue to build upon the program’s past success. If this year’s abridged season goes anything like last year, one could expect Shanklin’s teams to be vying for a spot in the top ranks of the state.
