“I was surfing in the Outer Banks [North Carolina] and then I tried out for a surf team,” said Kaitlyn Fallon, who is a member of the Pink Pineapple surf school, which was founded by Becky Burt of Manasquan as a way to give girls an opportunity to compete in a very male-dominated sport.

The girls surf off the Manasquan Inlet Beach.

“Sometimes it can be hard but the more patient you are, it gets easy,” Kaitlyn said.

Although Kaitlyn could not join her team this summer because of the restrictions enforced due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, she looks forward to surfing again, especially in Hawaii.

Kaitlyn’s best advice for other young girls who want to try surfing is, “Don’t give up,” she said.

She also enjoys playing basketball and softball.
