First Capital Wrestling Club

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — In 2018, Josh Smith saw a need for a local wrestling club. That’s when he and his brother, Zach Smith, joined forces to start the First Capital Wrestling Club. Formed from a desire to bring club wrestling to the area, the goal of the First Capital Wrestling Club is to establish a presence and make club wrestling more relevant in southern Ohio.

Josh takes great pride in what he is doing with the First Capital Wrestling Club and it’s clear by the way he talks about his kids. When asked about his team, he said he has a “great group of hardworking, disciplined kids.” Josh went on to say, “We have some of the best kids in the state and the country.” Some members of the First Capital Wrestling Club have won nationals and received All-American recognition.

The club is part of the Central Ohio Buckeye Youth Wrestling Association (COBYWA) League, an affiliate of the Ohio Wrestling Association for Youth (OH-WAY). COBYWA league season consists of regular season meets. Wrestlers are paired for the regular season based on age, weight, and experience, ensuring wrestlers of all skill levels get to participate on a level playing field. First Capital Wrestling Club wrestles all year through regular league play, state tournaments, and nationals.

The First Capital Wrestling Club currently has around 35 kids ranging in age from 4 years old up to middle school. There are two classes offered, beginner/intermediate and advanced. They keep both groups limited to 15-20 kids each in an effort to keep things smaller and on a more personal level. Growth is a goal as more coaches and volunteers are available so as to keep class sizes small. To learn more about the First Capital Wrestling Club, find them on Facebook.
