Nate Reuvers looking to lead Wisconsin back to a Big Ten Championship

MADISON, Wis. (BVM) —As Nate Reuvers and the Wisconsin Badgers look forward to starting their non-conference schedule this Wednesday against Eastern Illinois, they look to continue the hot streak they had right before the unexpected end to college basketball last season.

Winning nine out of their last 10 games and receiving the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament. Wisconsin should be looking to keep that fire lit and use Reuvers senior leadership to prove they are not only one of the best in the Big Ten, but in the entire country.

With the 2020-2021 NCAA basketball season about to tip off, the Badgers come into this season with high expectations ranked  seventh in the AP Top 25 poll. In large part this is because of Wisconsin’s 6-11 senior forward Nate Reuvers.

Since coming to Wisconsin in 2017 Reuvers has slowly gotten better, increasing his averages in points, rebounds, and blocks each season. Last year he tallied 13.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game,an increase from his 7.9 points, 3.9 rebound and 1.7 blocks during his sophomore season.

Reuvers attended Lakeville North High School in Lakeville, Minn. along with Badger teammate Tyler Wahl. Reuvers excelled in both soccer and basketball but began focusing more on basketball as he started to receive Division I interest as a sophomore.

His junior season at Lakeville, he averaged 19.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, helping the Panthers  reach the Class 4A state title game. His senior year, Reuvers averaged 25.6 points, 12.3 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game, helping Lakeville North to a 24-2 record.

For the 2017 recruiting  class Reuvers was a 4 star recruit and ranked as the 66th prospect nationally according to 247 sports. He received 24 other Division I offers and chose Wisconsin over Big Ten rival Minnesota.

Earning All-Big Ten Third team honors last season, Reuvers will be looking to not only receive higher honors in that category but also lead Wisconsin back to another Big Ten title as well as a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Although Reuvers top priority is leading his team to a successful season, the big man will also be looking to catch the attention of NBA scouts in his final year representing a Wisconsin uniform.

Wisconsin has a good history of developing stretch forwards that reach NBA caliber including Frank Kamisnky, Sam Dekker and Jon Leuer. The ability to stretch the floor as a big man is a huge asset, the ability to shoot from three is a near must if Reuvers is looking to take his game to the next level. His 33.7% shooting from three is something scouts will be looking for him to improve on this season.

Reuvers and the Badgers are in control of their own destiny, only time will tell if the preseason hype is worth the attention.
