Providence Pirates hire Mark Gaffney as first-ever head coach

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Press Release) — The Pirates are excited to name Mark Gaffney as the organization’s first ever head coach. Coach Gaffney brings an amazing foundation with him and was the top choice of both GM Paul Rogers and President Sercan Fenerci. Coach Gaffney has a strong background in coaching, and brings a combined 23 years of coaching experience from both collegiate and high school levels. Some highlights of his coaching career are the following:

  • Coached former NBA World Champions James Posey and David West @ Xavier University (Assistant Coach).
  • Led Lima Senior High School (Ohio) to first ever #1 Ranking in school history (Head Coach).
  • Wheaton College – best season 16-8 since 2005-2006 (Assistant Coach).
  • Wheaton College – highest two-year win total since 2008-2009, 28 wins (Assistant Coach).
  • Roger Williams University – first ever regional ranking in school history 2010-2011 (Assistant Coach).

“There were several strong candidates we had the privilege of having conversations with about our head coaching position. During the interview process it became clear that one candidate separated themselves in terms of checking all the boxes for us and our vision for the Providence Pirates and that was Mark Gaffney. We welcome Coach Gaffney to our Pirates family. Now the real work begins as we focus on building our first roster” said Paul Rogers, General Manager.

The team looks forward to having Coach Gaffney at their upcoming combine, to not only bring another strong vision for the team moving forward, but to also help our players reach their career dreams as well!
