Sanders signs with Longhorns

DENTON, Texas (BVM) — One of Texas’ own is staying in-state. Denton Ryan two-way football star Ja’Tavion Sanders will be suiting up for the burnt orange and white.

As the nation’s No. 2 athlete, according to ESPN, Sanders was a hot commodity. He drew offers from college football powerhouses such as Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, and Oklahoma. It didn’t matter. Sanders ended his recruitment when he committed to Texas just before their matchup with LSU in 2019.

“I always want to thank all the other universities who gave me an opportunity to play football at the next level,” Sanders said in a tweet. “But with that being said, I would like to say I am 100% committed to the University of Texas!”

He is the only five-star prospect in Texas’ 2021 recruiting class. Sanders is the real deal when he steps out on the gridiron. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound standout can do it on both sides of the ball. On the offensive side of the ball, Sanders was a reliable target. During his high school career, he hauled in 132 catches for receiving 2,352 yards. He also scored 26 touchdowns during his prep career.

On the other side of the ball, Sanders was just as impressive during his career. Sanders finished with 82 total tackles, 36 tackles for loss, and 17.5 sacks. With the breakaway speed that allows him to separate from defenders, Sanders can also use that speed to be a potential edge rusher at the collegiate level.

With Texas hiring Alabama’s former offensive coordinator, Steve Sarkisian as head coach, it is unclear what side of the ball will be featured on. But with Jack linebacker Joseph Ossai declaring for this year’s NFL Draft, it seems like Sanders could be heading to the defensive side of the ball. Either way, Sanders is bound for a successful career in Austin.

“I started playing football at five years old, and I’ve always dreamed about playing Division I football and hopefully playing at the next level,” Sanders said. “I want to thank God because, without him, nothing is possible. I want to thank my parents and all my coaches who have taught me how to become a better man and football player.”
