Nevada football announces changes to coaching staff

RENO, Nev. (BVM) – Nevada head football coach Jay Norvell has announced a pair of additions to his coaching staff for the 2021 season.

Chad Savage, a Reno native, spent the 2018-19 season at Nevada as a graduate assistant before spending last season at the University of San Diego as its wide receivers coach. He will coach tight ends for the Wolf Pack, while fifth-year assistant coach Timmy Chang will move outside to coach the wide receivers.

Riccardo Stewart was with the Wolf Pack for the 2020 season as a defensive analyst, but has been promoted to guide Nevada’s entire secondary. A former Arizona State standout defensive back himself, Stewart also coached high school football at a number of stops in Arizona and spent four years at his alma mater as a character and development coach.

“We’re excited to have Chad and Riccardo on our staff,” fifth-year head coach Jay Norvell said in a statement. “Each brings a familiarity with our program, strong recruiting acumen and great energy, on and off the field.”

Norvell announced more shuffling on the defensive side of the ball with second-year defensive coordinator Brian Ward, who coached linebackers last season, moving to coach defensive tackles for the 2021 season. Jackie Shipp will coach the Wolf Pack’s defensive ends while Ronnie Wheat, who guided the safeties in his first season in 2020, will coach linebackers.

Nevada finished 7-2 in 2020, its best winning percentage since 2010, and capped its season off with a Famous Idaho Potato Bowl win over Tulane.
