Deep Run football coach Hornik to retire after spring season

GLEN ALLEN, Va. (BVM) — Come Saturday, Deep Run High School football will be looking for a new head coach. Wildcats head football coach Chad Hornik announced he is retiring at the end of the shortened spring season, which will come to an end on April 2 with the team’s final game at home against Mills Godwin. Hornik has been the Wildcats’ head coach for the past five years where his team has gone 30-19 with three playoff appearances.

Overall, Hornik has been coaching high school football for the past 20 years, spending the last nine years as a head coach. Prior to his arrival at Deep Run, Hornik was the head coach at Thomas Jefferson where his teams went 9-37 over four years. Although the record may not look pretty, it was significant progress for a program that had less wins in the previous 14 seasons combined. Hornik was even able to bring the Vikings to the playoffs in just his second season at the helm, breaking a drought that stretched all the way back to 1976.

Hornik was a steady hand for a Deep Run team that experienced its fair share of ups and downs. In April 2020, the Wildcats’ community was struck with tragedy when football player Gabe Henderson was tragically killed in a boating accident. This year, the Wildcats honored their fallen teammate during games by wearing Henderson’s No. 10 on their helmets and honoring him during the team’s Senior Night game on March 5.

Though his career may not end with trophies or even during a fall season as he probably expected, Hornik will long be remembered for his contributions to two programs in the Richmond area. Wherever retirement takes him, Hornik should know he always has a home on the football fields in Richmond.
