Former Patriots WR Chris Hogan returns to New England as midfielder for Cannons LC

OAKLAND, N.J. (BVM) — Chris Hogan is noticeably the only player with zero years of professional lacrosse experience who ended up getting acquired off of waivers by the Cannons LC on March 31.

“I’m excited to be picked up by the Cannons Lacrosse Club,” said Hogan, who played for nine seasons in the NFL from 2011-2020. “Coach Quirk has done a great job acquiring a lot of talent for the team. I’m looking forward to competing with these guys and fighting for a potential spot on the roster.”

Hogan, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots, spent his final season with the New York Jets in 2020. In February of 2021, he signed with the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) which was less than two months before he was claimed by the Cannons LC.

The last time the 32-year-old played on a competitive lacrosse team was when he played for the Penn State Nittany Lions (2007-10). Eleven years later, he is putting in more work than ever to prepare for PLL training camp, which will ultimately decide if he makes an official spot on the roster for the 2021 season.

“Chris is one of the freakiest athletes I’ve ever seen,” said Tom Ottaiano, former New York Jet and current business partner/CEO at Today’s Business. “At his pro [NFL] days, he was putting up lineman numbers on the bench press test. If I would bet on anyone it would be Chris.”

Up until this moment, Hogan has been training out of East Coast Strength & Performance (Long Island) with Warren Kelly and Freak Strength (Oakland, N.J.) with Mike Guadango. He sees this journey as just another challenge and wants to prove that he can compete with some of the best players in the league.

“Chris Hogan has won at every level and he has had an influence on an NFL locker room,” said Sean Quirk, Cannons LC head coach. “I am confident his athletic ability, work ethic, past high level lacrosse experience and commitment to winning will give him a chance to compete very well in training camp.”

There are some high expectations Hogan is setting for himself with the Cannons LC. The team is formerly known as the Boston Cannons in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) that took home the Steinfeld Trophy after winning the 2020 MLL Championship. Shortly after, they merged with the PLL and became the Cannons LC, so this is the first season the team is playing in the league.

“We’re thrilled that Chris was acquired by the Cannons Lacrosse Club,” said Ottaiano and Joe Sanfilippo (Manager, Growth & Partnerships) at Today’s Business. “We have a lot of great memories in New England so it is awesome to see things come full circle with Chris now playing for the former Boston Cannons of the MLL.”

The 2021 season is expected to start June 4 and run through Sept. 19. Hogan has not yet publicly announced any plans to retire from the NFL and this is only the beginning of his PLL career. In this journey, Hogan is proving that it’s never too late to do something outside of what others expect — and still succeed at it.

“Making it in the NFL for as long as Chris has is an incredibly rare & near-impossible achievement,” Sanfilippo said. “This speaks for itself when it comes to his athleticism. Knowing his lacrosse background and the training he is doing, I have no doubt that Chris will be able to succeed in the PLL.”
