Leslie wrestling makes impressive state semifinal run

LESLIE, Mich. (BVM) — It was a season filled with adversity for the Leslie High School wrestling program. Having just 11 wrestlers for a 14-spot lineup was perhaps the biggest issue. But navigating through injuries and Covid-19 protocols was no easy task either.

In the end, the Blackhawks embraced each challenge and put together a truly special campaign. It began with Leslie winning its first-ever Greater Lansing Athletic Conference championship.

From there, they would compile a couple of team district tournament wins. After picking up two additional team wins at regionals, the Blackhawks made history with their first regional title in program history as well.

Another win in the state quarterfinals would take the improbable run all the way to the state semifinals, where the Blackhawks would be bested by eventual state champion Clinton.

While the year may not have ended with a gold ball, Leslie still showed the heart, toughness and fight that they pride the program on. And now, some of the Leslie wrestlers will have a chance to bring home their own title trophy.

Five of the team’s wrestlers will keep the season going by competing individually at state this weekend, including Ben Smieska, Gabe Weber, Grant Weber, Cannon Risner and Lucas Mooney.
