Martinsville gymnastics competes at state for first time since 1985

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (BVM) — The Martinsville High School girls gymnastics team had a phenomenal 2021 season which ended up in its first trip to the IHSAA state finals since 1985.

This year’s tournament was held at Worthen Arena at Ball State University, and the Artesians were thrilled for their first chance to compete at this level in 36 years.

Martinsville would end up finishing ninth overall in the team competition. They ended up with scores of 27.375 in the vault, 25.400 in the bars, 24.675 in the beam and 25.700 in the floor to finish with a team total of 103.150.

The score was over eight points behind the team champion in Valparaiso High School who finished at 111.300.

The Artesians were led by many throughout the season, but two of their biggest stars were Lily Boyd and Phoenix Woodward. Boyd specifically led the team at state in the vault with an individual score of 9.525.

Martinsville made it to state thanks to the contributions of Woodward, Boyd and others to earn an impressive third-place finish at regionals. Now, after finally making a state championship appearance, the future for Artesians gymnastics is bright.
