Chris Beard named Texas men’s basketball head coach

AUSTIN, Texas (BVM) — After a run to the NCAA Championship in 2019 and an Elite Eight appearance in 2018, former Texas Tech head basketball coach Chris Beard was hired by the Texas Longhorns as their 25th head coach.

“I’m thrilled and excited to be coming back to Austin and back to the Longhorn family,” Beard said in a press release. “I can’t express how excited I am for this opportunity and the journey that lies ahead. I want to thank President Hartzell and Athletics Director Chris Del Conte for their trust. It’s time to get to work. Our top priority will be embracing our players as soon as we get to campus, and I look forward to starting this journey together towards our championship goals.”

Beard spent five total seasons with the Red Raiders. He has coached a total of 11 years at the collegiate level. Over those 11 seasons, he has an overall record of 252-103. He has also advanced to four NCAA Tournaments.

Coming off five losing seasons, Beard took over at Texas Tech. In the following five seasons, he would help the Red Raiders to an overall record of 112-55. Along with an impressive regular-season record, Beard also had an impressive 9-3 record in the NCAA Tournament.

His five years at Texas Tech were highlighted by the 2019 season where the Red Raiders advanced to the National Championship. They also won a school-best 31 games that year.

“Chris Beard is the right coach at the right time, not just for our student-athletes, but for all of Longhorn Nation,” said Jay Hartzell, UT President in the press release. “Many in our community have followed his impressive career since his time here as a student assistant, and we couldn’t be more excited to have one of our own return home as an accomplished coach and leader, with the experience to help us reach new heights.”
