Girls flag football coming to the AHSAA

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (BVM) — Girls flag football across the United States continues to pick up steam, with a fifth state, Alabama, adding it as an officially-sanctioned Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) sport.

Alabama joins Alaska, Nevada, Florida and Georgia as states to make it a recognized high school sport. They’ll be partnering with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, who have been the driving force behind the growth of girls flag football across the country.

They offer scholarships, camps and tournaments to players and teams throughout the U.S. to promote female equity in football. This partnership will have the Alabama girls ready to take to the field this coming fall.

Per the AHSAA, teams will have a minimum of eight games on their inaugural schedules, and teams will be allowed to roster up to 25 athletes. There will also be a playoffs that concludes with a state champion being named.

This will be the 27th sanctioned varsity sport in Alabama.
