Former DIII goalie Shelby Money goes pro with NWSL’s Racing Louisville FC

GLASSBORO, N.J. (BVM) There aren’t too many athletes who go pro in their sport following a college career at the Division III level. But for former Rowan University women’s goalkeeper Shelby Money — nothing is too far out of reach.

Money was a four-year starter on the women’s soccer team at Rowan from 2015-2018. Just three years later, she is now signed in the NWSL with the Racing Louisville Football Club.

“I think this is incredible,” Rowan women’s soccer coach Scott Leacott said in a statement. “This has been Shelby’s goal since she was a little girl. No one puts in more work than she has; she has put in countless hours to pursue her dream to be a professional athlete. I know as a program we could not be more ecstatic for her.  She has certainly made the entire Rowan University community proud and we can’t wait to see her fulfill her dreams.”

In Money’s last season appearance with the team, the 5-foot-7 goalkeeper made 61 saves in 1,616 minutes and her save percentage was 85.9%. She had eight shutouts and was named as the 2018 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Goalkeeper of the Year.

So far in her 2021 season with Racing Louisville FC, Money and her team drew 2-2 in a preseason tournament against Orlando Pride in the Challenge Cup on April 10. Shelby was deemed as a substitute who was ultimately not put into the game.

There are three out of four matches left to play in the Challenge Cup before the 24-game regular season begins on May 15. Next, the team will play the Washington Spirit on April 15.
