East Canton boys track and field seeking four-peat despite inexperience

EAST CANTON, Ohio (BVM) — The East Canton High School boys track and field program has been the gold standard for Division 3 competition in Ohio recently. Prior to last season, the Hornets had won three consecutive state championships.

The most recent championship came in 2019, where the Hornets finished third in the final event — the 1,600m — to earn a narrow six-point victory over Columbiana Crestview.

Unfortunately, they never got a chance at a four-peat last spring. But now, they are back and looking to keep their incredible success going.

However, after being 20-plus months removed from its last title, East Canton has a very different roster than in previous years. This season, there are 27 team members, but a very select few that actually have varsity-level track and field experience. Distance runner Nick Martino is the only member on this year’s roster who competed at state in 2019.

In the Hornets’ first meet of the season at the Fairless Invitational, they placed in the top-five as a team. Gaining more experience can only help, but many of this year’s team members already did so during the fall cross country season when East Canton won its third state title in the sport.

With several sophomores and juniors in the fold for East Canton, it may not be long before they not only find success, but reclaim the dynasty status they had going two years ago.
