Jaemyn Brakefield transferring to Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. (BVM) — Former four-star prospect Jaemyn Brakefield is on his way to the University of Mississippi after leaving the  Duke basketball program almost a month ago. On Wednesday, he announced that he would be continuing his college career at Ole Miss.

“The opportunity to be a Blue Devil meant the world to me and I want to thank everyone I met in my time here at Duke,” Brakefield said in a press release. “The bonds I built will be with me forever. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of individuals to be around during these unpredictable times and I thank my coaches, teammates and our fans for accepting me with open arms. With that being said, I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal. I look forward to experiencing what God has in store for me ahead.”

Brakefield appeared in 22 games this past season and averaged just 12.5 minutes. In those games, he averaged 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds.

With the transfer portal being very popular this year, there have been a lot of opposing views on players moving from team to team, but head coach Mike Krzyzewski wasn’t one of those people to speak negatively about Brakefield’s decision.

“We support the decision made by Jaemyn and his family,” head coach Mike Krzyzewski said in the press release. “He was a terrific representative of our program and we wish him all of the best as he continues his academic and athletic pursuits. Jaemyn has a bright future ahead of him and we will miss him.”

Now the Jackson, Mississippi, native will be heading home to help the Rebels compete for an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Ole Miss won seven of its last nine games to close out the season. The Rebels were able to win one game in the SEC Tournament but ended up losing to the LSU Tigers in the quarterfinal round. They finished with an overall record of 16-11, and Brakefield will look to help the Rebels improve that record next season.
