Catching up with former Hornet, Nolasco

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (BVM) — The 2018 baseball season for the Weeki Wachee varsity Hornets was nothing to write home about. The team finished 11-14 on the year, falling in the second round of the playoffs.

For former player German Nolasco, it was more of the same. While Nolasco was a staple in the Hornets’ lineup playing in 15 games, he batted just .174 on 28 plate appearances, scoring only four runs and driving in two RBIs.

But that wasn’t the end for Nolasco. Fast forward to 2021, and Nolasco chased his dream, which required him moving across the country. Nolasco is currently the everyday second baseman for the Jamestown Community College Jayhawks in Jamestown, N.Y.

Perhaps it was his versatility that intrigued head coach Jordan Basile despite less-than-stellar high school batting numbers. As a Hornet, Nolasco was 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts, and even got one pitching appearance, striking out two in an inning of work. But his fielding was the reason he is now starting second baseman for the Jayhawks. Nolasco was a vacuum on the field, completing his defensive opportunities at a .909 clip.

Now on the East Coast, Nolasco is showing that he was worth the roster spot. His average is up since his time at Weeki Wachee, batting .225 through his college career thus far. His on-base percentage is even higher at .311, showing some patience in the box. And of course, his fielding is still on point, converting his defensive plays at a .925 career mark.

The Jayhawks are just 6-9 so far this season, but Nolasco is an example of pursuing your dream and achieving it.
