Former Fivay Falcon expected to continue rolling for Ole Miss

HUDSON, Fla. (BVM) — When Gunnar Hoglund starred for the Fivay Falcons, he was an electric factory. Like every MLB prospect once was, he was the best player on his high school team and led in nearly every category.

Through 52.1 innings of work on the mound, Hoglund struck out 105 batters while keeping his ERA to an immaculate 0.27. As a batter himself, the 6-foot-4 stud had a .385 average while driving in 20 runs. On the bases, he swiped a perfect 19 on 19 attempts. This is why he was drafted in the first round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

But since that time, Hoglund has hung true to his Ole Miss commitment, and has been pitching for them ever since while keeping his name well atop the MLB prospect list. Entering his junior season, the ace was named a 2021 preseason All-American second team selection off the heels of his impressive sophomore year where he had a 1.16 ERA with 37 punchouts.

His coaches even got him to work a new pitch into his repertoire: the slider. While he struggled with it initially, it’s now just another key weapon at his disposal. Hoglund also mixes in a four-seam fastball, a change-up and a curveball.

So far this season, the Rebels are 27-11 and Hoglund has been their featured pitcher. In nine starts, he holds a 3-2 record and a 2.73 ERA. He has pitched the most innings for the team this season as it relies on his arm to give it quality starts.

As one of the best baseball prospects to ever come out of Hudson, Hoglund is a name to keep your ears open for when the next MLB Draft rolls around.
