Hope College hockey takes home second ACHA national championship

HOLLAND, Mich. (BVM) — After missing out on last year’s season, the Hope College hockey team is back on top once again. The top-ranked Flying Dutchmen won the American College Hockey Association Division 3 national championship this week with a convincing 3-0 victory over Arkansas.

Hope won its second national championship in program history, also taking home the title back in 2018. While this year’s championship game may have looked easy on the scoreboard, getting to it was not.

Throughout the year off the ice, the Flying Dutchmen — as did many — had to deal with constant interruptions to their season due to the pandemic. On the ice, Hope had to make an incredible comeback just to get to the championship.

During the national semifinal game, Hope found itself staring at a three-goal deficit entering the third period. But remarkably, the team would comeback with three goals of its own in the final session, and score its fourth unanswered goal in overtime to lead Hope to the championship game.

The national championship featured second-period goals from a pair of sophomores in Mason Weiss and Gabe Gunneson that helped the Flying Dutchmen to a 2-0 lead. Although the Razorbacks are known for their offense, Hope was able to shut them down throughout the contest.

An empty-net goal by Ashton Bol with two minutes remaining would seal the deal for Hope, who have now won two national championships in the last three seasons of play. With just four seniors on the roster — each of whom will have the opportunity to return next season — the future looks bright for the Flying Dutchmen.
