Williamsville North’s Catrabone brings home national freshman title
WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (BVM) — Williamsville North freshman wrestler Cameron Catrabone came into the high school with an already accomplished résumé. After picking up Section VI wrestling championships as a seventh and eighth grader in 2019 and 2020, Catrabone continued his dominance to close his freshman year.
The Spartans’ star wrestler competed at the National High School Coaches Association tournament in Virginia Beach, Va. over the weekend. Catrabone would go on to win the Freshman Division title at 132 pounds after defeating Judah Aybar of Manchester, Md., on a 6-5 decision in the championship match. The championship run for Catrabone included six straight wins over the three–day tournament.
The lead up to Catrabone’s final matchup against Aybar almost came to a halt for the freshman wrestler, with an illegal move from D’mitri Alarcon helping send his semifinal match to overtime. Catrabone would pick up points with a double leg in the overtime period, ending the battle with a 7-5 win.
With two sectional titles over the last two years, the Williamsville North product can now add a national title to his list of accomplishments. The title win will most likely end Catrabone’s season with Erie County not having a spring wrestling season.
