Utah’s Swedish freshman guard to enter transfer portal

SALT LAKE CITY (BVM) – A fifth Utah basketball player has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal since the end of the season. Freshman guard Pelle Larsson is the latest Ute to pursue an opportunity elsewhere joining Jordan Kellier, Alfonso Plummer, Ian Martinez and Timmy Allen.

As a true freshman last season, Larsson proved he was ready to make an impact right away after a year of professional basketball in his native Sweden. The 6-foot-5 guard played in all 25 games for Utah, starting 18, and averaged 8.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

Larsson took over primary point guard duties following Rylan Jones’ shoulder injury late in the season and showed his playmaking and scoring ability. He was second on the team in assists behind Allen and the third-best 3-point shooter on the roster at 46% (team-high amongst players who took more than 25 3-pointers).

The freshman’s brightest moment came in a Jan. 9 loss to No. 17 Oregon where he scored 15 points, shot perfect from 3-point range (3-3), grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists.

Despite the handful of departures, new Utah head coach Craig Smith has landed commitments from Gabe Madsen (Cincinnati), David Jenkins Jr. (UNLV), Rollie Worster (Utah State) and Marco Anthony (Utah State) since April 2.

Larsson is reportedly leaving open the possibility of returning to Salt Lake City.
