Oregon boys soccer moves on to sectional semifinals

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (BVM) — The Oregon High School boys soccer team played in a thrilling regional final game that had to be decided in penalty kicks Thursday.

The No. 5-seeded Panthers entered the game as the clear underdogs against No. 1-seeded Sun Prairie. Oregon had even lost to the Cardinals earlier in the season 1-0 but Thursday night the Panthers avenged that loss.

Sun Prairie took the lead twice in the game, but each time Oregon had an answer, leading to a 2-2 tie heading into overtime. Neither team was able to finish the game after two overtimes which meant penalty kicks would decide the game.

It was Oregon’s second straight game that would end in penalty kicks. On May 4 in the regional semifinal, the Panthers beat Madison East in penalty kicks (4-3). Thursday night would end the same way with Oregon upsetting Sun Prairie in penalty kicks (4-3).

The Panthers will now play in the sectional semifinals on May 8 in Baraboo, Wis. against No. 2-seeded Madison West who beat Monona Grove 5-0. The winner will move onto the sectional final and play the winner of the Verona vs. Waunakee game.
