Cal football has three players added to NFL roster

BERKELEY, Calif. (BVM) – Former Cal offensive tackle Jake Curhan and his new head coach have quite a bit in common. Not only are Curhan and Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll now members of the same franchise, but they both attended Redwood High School (CA).

It could be why Carroll and the Seahawks were willing to sign Curhan to an undrafted free agent contract, announced on the opening day of the club’s rookie mini-camp. A two-time honorable mention All-Pac-12 selection, Curhan started 40 of 42 possible games at right tackle during his collegiate career.

He fell out of the draft, in part, due to pre-draft medical tests that revealed a heart issue. Curhan has said the heart issue is something he’s known about for some time and it’s not something he’s too concerned with.

The former Bears’ right tackle became the second player from Cal’s 2020 roster to be added to an NFL roster as an undrafted free agent, and third overall.

Defensive end Zeandae Johnson signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings after six seasons at Cal (2015-20). The Fresno, Calif. native played in 41 games and started 18 of them during his career in Berkeley where he missed both the entire 2015 and 2017 campaigns due to injury.

Playing in all 13 games as a junior, Johnson posted career-highs of 29 tackles, five tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble and five quarterback hurries. He started all four games during a shortened 2020 season, contributing eight tackles and one quarterback hurry.

Johnson will see a familiar face in Minneapolis after the Vikings chose Cal cornerback Camryn Bynum in the fourth round with the 125th overall pick. The Bears have now had at least one player taken in the NFL Draft in 33 of the last 35 years.

The only Cal player to start all 42 games from 2017-20, Bynum recorded a career-high 63 tackles and three tackles for loss as a junior. He earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors as a senior in 2020 when he started all four games, contributing 19 tackles, one interception and two pass breakups.
