Jumping over obstacles is no problem in more ways than one for Saint Francis’ Lohr

MILTON, Ga. — Jumping over obstacles is no problem for 14-year-old Amelia Lohr, she’s been a champion long before she ever got on a horse. The rising freshman at Saint Francis High School has dyslexia, but with her positive attitude and work ethic, she’s trotting to the winner’s circle.

Amelia fell in love with horseback riding five years ago and now rides Bailey for StoneCreek Sport Horses.

The best advice she’s received from her coach who is also her mentor, “believe in yourself. You are never afraid of the scary stuff, so don’t start doubting yourself,” says Amelia.

Living with dyslexia, Amelia says she does not always learn the same way others do. She says her coach is patient, encouraging, strong, and is always trying to come up with new ways to teach her.

All those years of hoofing it have paid off for Amelia. She is now competing at the Novice Level of Eventing and just this year, qualified for USEA American Eventing Championship after placing first at a horse show.

“You only live once, so live life to its fullest,” says Amelia.

And when it comes to horse shows, it’s a family affair for the Lohr family. The night before a big show, Amelia enjoys having dinner with her mom, and trainer, Ashley Dodds, for some laughs and encouragement. Dinner may include Chick Fil A or ice cream, a couple of her favorites.

When she is not riding horses, Amelia enjoys hanging out with her friends, and as a member of the National Charity League of Milton, loves to volunteer her time for local rescue organizations. She also has two rescue dogs of her own, Toby, a lab mix, and Lucy, a Great Pyrenees.

After high school, Amelia strives to attend a college with an eventing team so she can continue to pursue her passion, and eventually make her home on a farm!
