Space Coast Crew rowing teams find success under Coach Little’s leadership

INDIALANTIC, Fla. — Coach Bryan Little started rowing with the Greater Dayton (OH) Rowing Association in 2001 as a conditioning option to improve for football. But after just a couple of rows he found that he had a great passion for rowing. While stationed in Jacksonville (FL) during his time in the US Navy he had the opportunity to coach at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville, the Bolles School, and later at Rochester Rowing Club (MN) as a full-time coach. After realizing that winter in the far north was not for him, he and his wife came back to Florida and coached at the Academy of Holy Names in Tampa. Then an opportunity came up to coach for Space Coast Crew (SCC). He has been head coach for the past 3 years.

The team is growing and getting more competitive and just recently won the Florida East District Championship for the 8th year in a row. When Coach Little started the SCC team had about 90 athletes and now, we are closing in on 130 kids on the team. SCC has been training for over 160 days already this season and this leads to a great comradery among rowers and their families.

In his tenure with the team, SCC has become more successful in the sport. SCC had a boat qualify for Youth Nationals with rowers Tanner Mathews and Matthew Olinde representing the team. In his three-year tenure, Coach Little has seen four of his rowers move on to compete at the collegiate level: Emily Eastwood (UCF), Tanner Mathews (Oregon State), Matthew Olinde (FIT) and, Noah Ogburn (Merchant Marine Academy).

The future Coach Little has in the works for SCC is to grow the program into a national powerhouse. SCC has a lot going for it to achieve this goal – a beautiful, year-round rowing venue on the river and in the canals, athletes that are committed to the sport, and the support of the families that make up our SCC community. Coach Little does his best to provide quality coaching for all athletes so that all levels of the team are pushing one another to be better and stronger physically, mentally, and emotionally.
