Evergreen girls soccer closes in on unbeaten regular season
ARVADA, Colo. (BVM) — The Evergreen Cougars captured the Class 4A Jeffco League championship and finished just one win short of a state title in 2019. No one knows what they could’ve achieved the following spring had the COVID-19 pandemic not wiped out the entire 2020 season, but this year’s team is back in position to claim another league title and make another serious run at their first state title in 24 years.
After beating the D’Evelyn Jaguars 2-1 on the road Thursday, the undefeated Cougars (9-0) are closing in on another Jeffco title, and as the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A, they’re likely to earn a top seed for the 16-team state tourney which is less than two weeks away.
Seniors Myla Stewart and Jocelin Zimmerer both scored first-half goals to give Evergreen a 2-0 lead over a D’Evelyn squad that desperately needed a victory to earn a bid to the state tourney. The Jaguars battled back to make things interesting in the second half, especially when senior Lauren Cook found the net in the 70th minute to cut the Cougars’ lead in half, but Evergreen would hold on for the win to keep its perfect record intact.
Zimmerer’s 35th-minute goal, which proved to be the match-winner, was her third of the season while Stewart’s goal was her eighth and it tied her for the Cougars’ team lead with junior Catherine Rapp, who has team-best 23 points on eight goals and seven assists.
Evergreen will try to complete an undefeated regular season next week when it faces No. 7-ranked Wheat Ridge (7-1) on Wednesday in a match that will decide the Jeffco League title.
