Luke McCaffrey joins Rice Owls

HOUSTON (BVM) — The 2021 college football season is still months away. But for the Rice Owls, they have a lot to look forward to as they bring in former four-star quarterback prospect Luke McCaffrey.

“Excited to announce that I will be continuing my athletic and academic career at Rice University,” McCaffrey announced via Twitter.

Before announcing his transfer, McCaffrey was at the University of Nebraska. While in Lincoln, McCaffrey completed 63.2% of his passes, threw one TD and threw for a total of 466 yards. He also became the first Nebraska quarterback to win his starting debut since 2013. He completed 62% of his passes for 152 yards in a 30-23 win over Penn State.

But for most of the season, he was in a position battle with Adrian Martinez. Martinez took most of the snaps and when the season ended McCaffrey decided to enter the transfer portal.

McCaffrey originally signed with the University of Louisville. But after a handful of months with the Cardinals, McCaffrey once again decided to enter the transfer portal.

This time around, McCaffrey decided to join Rice University. It’s McCaffrey’s third school, but he’s just hoping for a fresh start and hoping for a chance to compete for a starting role.

He still has some things to work on, but the sky’s the limit for McCaffrey as he looks to take Conference USA (CUSA) by storm.

“[He] can still improve overall strength as well as velocity on his passes,” 247Sports national recruiting analyst Allen Trieu said. “[He] only had one true full year at quarterback, so continuing to quicken up his reading of defenses and comfort at the position are key. Will need to sit and learn, but has great upside because of intangibles and athleticism.”
