Orange High School wrestling is back

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — After mundane seasons of incompetent wrestling teams, Orange wrestling is back and the Panthers have secured the second position in regionals with 110 points. Looking at last season, the Panthers secured the second position in the Big 8 Conference, however last year was the end of a 16-year long conference winning streak and the Panthers were finally dethroned. This year, the Panthers remained at that position, but had plenty of good moments to showcase their comeback.

During the Big 8 Conference Tournament, which was held at an Eastern Guilford High School Gymnasium last week, the Panthers almost finished at the top, only to fall just short of a top finish. However, this defeat was not taken with grief. Union Pines High School finished in first place with 147 points and the Panthers finished second with 110 points.

Moreover, the planning for the next event has already been finalized, and the Panthers will have senior wrestler Kessel Summers, along with fellow Panthers Hayden Horne, Brendon Worsham, Matthew Smith-Breeden, Dillon Heffernan and Henry Joubert-Stanzel, at the 3A State Championships on June 26. The six Panthers qualified for the state championships with three making it after advancing to the regional finals. This was a huge win for a program looking to rebound.

Summers brought home the most points for the team during the regional tournament as he made it to the final round against Andrew Clark from Union Pines High School. Though he would eventually fall to Western Harnett’s Will Lewis 8-6 in the 138-pound finals, he qualified for the upcoming 3A state championship by virtue of his first ever regional finals appearance. Horne and Worsham would also finish second in their respective weight classes, helping prove the Panthers are once again a program to be reckoned with.

With the Class 3A State Championships beginning at the end of the week, expectations are high for an Orange team that has seen nothing but success over the past decade and a half. Geared with a strong stable of experienced wrestlers, Panthers’ fans are hopeful to see their team members on the final podiums after a strong return.
