Cadence Maisonneuve galloping her way to success

BARRIE, Ontario — Hard work, dedication and a love for horses is what drives Midhurst resident Cadence Maisonneuve to achieving her dreams. As a young equestrian, she has her sights set on turning her passion into a career.

Cadence began riding nine years ago. She will be going into grade 11 at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Barrie. She has always been involved in other sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and track and field. She describes herself as an introvert; a hard worker, caring and compassionate.

Cadence says her personal goal within Eventing is to learn as much as she can about the sport and the industry. She is a staff member and rider at Lindsay Beer Eventing in Midhurst. This year she plans on going to her first sanctioned events, COVID permitting! Her dreams are to keep moving up the levels and eventually a career in the horse world.

Cadence says her biggest challenge in the sport is the financial aspect. With two other siblings, her devotion to the sport has motivated her to work at the stable which allows her to be more independent in financing her dreams. She is a working student for Lindsay Beer Eventing, who is also her coach.

This year, Cadence was fortunate enough to receive one of five bursaries provided by Ontario Equestrian which she will put towards competitions this summer.

Cadence says the best advice she has received is: If you want it badly enough, you’ll find a way to make it work! She puts this advice behind her motivation, everything from finding a way to get to the barn, lessons, and money for equipment. “With the support of my family and my team at the barn, we always find a way to make it work!”

Cadence remembers from a young age, she always knew she wanted to ride and ever since then, she has been learning, working, and appreciating everything, from all the chores and hard work, assisting her coach and others at horse shows, to competing herself.

She spends as much time as possible at the barn with the horses and says, “I take every second spent at the barn as a blessing, since you never know if or when you no longer are able to.” Riding is more than competing. It’s the relationships you build with the horses, the hours of training, the farm work and everything in between. “I love the trust and bond you can build with an animal. The feeling you get the morning of a horse show plus all the amazing people you meet along the way.”

Outside of horses, she enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family, keeping active through exercise and listening to music. She says on their way to competitions they like to put on some country music for the drive, and alternatively some pop music afterwards. This is when she takes the time to review her plans before arriving at the show, such as going over her dressage test. Once at the competitions, her coach Lindsay walks her students through the cross-country course as well as the stadium jumping. “Being part of this team has taught me to support not only my teammates but all the other riders at the event. We are all there because we love horses. I love Eventing, because even as competitors we all hope everyone does well.” She recalls a time she entered the showring and completely forgot the test. She says her coach reassured her that she knew the test, and once she was in the ring, she knew what to do and realized it was just nerves!

Cadence concludes that the constant support by Lindsay and her mom Penny has helped her grow as a rider and a person. She says she can always count on them for anything, even outside of the horses. “I know that I definitely wouldn’t be where I am at this moment without them!”
