Molly Stout doesn’t let diabetes slow her down in the pool as a Martinsville HS swimmer

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. — Molly Stout is dedicated to being the best she can be for herself and her Arties swim team. During the summer, she is up every day at 6:15 a.m. and in the weight room by 6:50 a.m. followed by swimming practice. By around 10:30 a.m. she is finished. On Tuesday and Thursday she returns to the pool in the afternoon making it a double day of swimming.

Most would find these practice hours challenging. But Molly has the additional obstacle of being Type 1 diabetic. She tries not to let Type 1 slow her down too much but has to be very aware of her blood sugar while exercising, always aware of how she is feeling and what her blood sugar numbers are reflecting.  When her blood sugar is too high, she  gives herself insulin; and drinks juice or eats when she has a low blood sugar.  It is a chronic illness which takes 24 hour-a-day attention. Molly has learned to face this challenge and does not let it slow her down.

“I love the sport of swimming and love to be a student of the sport,” Molly stated.” It makes me happy and I enjoy working hard and pushing myself to the limit. I would like to break records and swim in college so that definitely pushes me.”

Jessica Stout, Molly’s mother, and her uncle, David Dunn, were both swimmers at Martinsville High School and both still hold records. Her uncle holds the 50 freestyle time and her mom holds the 50 and 100 freestyle times. Molly has her eye on the 50 yard freestyle time. She would like to beat her mom’s record time of :24.42 which she has held since 1994.

During this past season as a sophomore, Molly broke the 100 yard breaststroke record at Martinsville High School. She said, “It felt amazing!” In the upcoming season she has a few more records she would like to break and would like to make the IHSAA Championship meet as well. Her goal is to be in the Indiana top eight. Once she graduates, she would also like to continue to swim in college. Her eyes are set on recruiting this season. As she smiles she said, “I have not broken my mom’s 50 freestyle record but I will this season!”

Molly’s mom was asked about the upcoming season. “I can’t think of too many better moments in my life than when I get to see my name come down from the wall and my daughter’s name go up,”  she stated, “I can’t wait!”

Molly loves swimming where her mom and uncle also swam. It is a great family legacy!
