Darien native nearing start of hockey’s 2021 World Junior Summer Showcase
DARIEN, Conn. (BVM) — The 2021 World Junior Summer Showcase (WJSS) is set to kickoff two weeks from now at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. The United States, Finland and Sweden are the three nations that will compete against one another.
Among those who made the 2021 WJSS roster for the United States includes Scott Morrow, an 18-year-old Darien native who is a right-shot defenseman. He is a 2021 NHL Draft prospect and is ranked No. 39 amongst North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting. Marrow previously played three seasons for Shattuck-St. Mary’s School and registered 167 points on 45 goals and 122 assists over 129 games.
The WJSS showcase is set to include 11 games which will stretch across eight days. The games will help determine who will make the junior national teams in their respective nations. If Marrow is selected, he will join the U.S. National Junior Team and compete at the 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship.
The World Junior Championship will kick off in December, but even if he doesn’t make the team, Marrow will still have a busy year in the works. He is currently on the University of Massachusetts’ Men’s Hockey roster for the 2021-22 season. The first game of the season is scheduled for Oct. 2 against Minnesota State.
“Scott is a highly-skilled, offensive-minded, right-shot defenseman with great size who projects to be another elite NHL prospect for our program,” UMass head coach Greg Carvel said in a June 10 press release. “Scott has great mobility and tremendous ability with the puck which allows him to create offense. He spent the last few years at Shattuck St. Mary’s and is expected to be a big contributor from day one at UMass.”
