The Toledo Mud Hens handle the Indianapolis Indians 11-5 as they take two out of their last three against the Indians

INDIANAPOLIS (BVM) — The Indianapolis Indians’ pitching struggled greatly against Toledo on Wednesday, as their first three pitchers couldn’t control the Mud Hens’ bats resulting in an early 11-0 deficit.

Thirty year old Shelby Miller (4.20 ERA) took the mound for the Indians to start the game but quickly gave up a solo home run to Mud Hens left fielder, Jacob Robson, who smacked a 411foot home run in the top of the first.

This would be Miller’s first and only inning of his first loss of the season as 36yearold Steven Wright (6.35 ERA) came on in the second inning. Wright didn’t perform much better for the Indians as he gave up eight hits, five walks and five runs in four-and-a-half innings.

In the top of the fifth inning, 30-year-old Matt Eckelman came on to relieve Wright, but again, the Mud Hens had his number as he gave up back-to-back home runs to the first two batters he faced.

Renato Nunez, the first baseman for the Mud Hens, hit a threerun shot which was immediately followed by a solo home run hit by Kody Clemens Roger Clemens’ son. The Mud Hens extended their lead to 11-0 after the fifth inning.

The Mud Hens kept Indianapolis’ offense quiet with pitching from 24-year-old Angel de Jesus (2.94 ERA) and 28-year-old Locke St. John (1.26 ERA) who extends his record to 3-0 on the year with this win. Combined they threw six scoreless innings until 23-year-old Wladimir Pinto (3.54 ERA) relieved St. John at the end of the sixth.

Pinto couldn’t keep the shutout going however, as third baseman Hunter Owen hit a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the seventh. This set off the offense for the Indians as they were able to tack on two more runs by the end of the seventh on an error by Mud Hens’ shortstop, Yariel Gonzalez.

The Indians also scored two more in the eighth after the Mud Hens put 26-year-old Nolan Blackwood (6.26 ERA) in for Pinto. Right fielder Chris Sharpe scored on a sacrifice fly by the designated hitter, Bligh Madris, and first baseman Christian Bethancourt scored on a wild pitch by Blackwood.

Both teams’ closers held the opposition batters to threeup, threedown innings and the Indians fell 11-5 to the Mud Hens.

This loss pushes the Indians to .500 at 33-33 as they sit in the middle of the pack in the Triple-A East Midwest Division. For the Mud Hens, this win keeps them three games back from the leaders, the Omaha Storm Chasers, in the Triple-A East Midwest Division.
