Senators nab right wing Tyler Boucher with tenth pick in NHL Draft

OTTAWA, ONT. – With the tenth overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft, the Ottawa Senators selected right-winger Tyler Boucher. Boucher has been playing with the U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP) and has already announced his commitment to play for Boston University of the Hockey East Conference for the 2021-22 season.

Various hockey outlets had Boucher ranked to go off the draft board between the late first round and fourth round. But the New Jersey native was chosen earlier than some expected, perhaps in part because of his familiarity with the NHL game. Boucher’s father, Brian Boucher, spent years as the goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers before he coached the younger Boucher’s prep school hockey team.

Other players that experts thought the Senators may opt for: six-foot-six goalie Sebastian Cossa (who was selected at No. 15 by the Detroit Red Wings) and Jesper Wallstedt (the Swedish goaltender chosen by the Minnesota Wild). Both the Red Wings and Wild traded up to select their future goalies.

Tyler, who is known for his tough, physical style of play, is expected to compete for a slot of the Senators’ third line.

The first pick in the draft belonged to the Buffalo Sabres, who snagged University of Michigan defenseman Owen Power. The Sabres will pair Power with their 2018 No. 1 overall pick, fellow defenseman Rasmus Dahlin. The NHL’s expansion team, Seattle Kraken, grabbed Power’s collegiate teammate, center Matthew Beniers to be the franchise’s first ever draft pick.
