China goes 1-2 in prelims of women’s springboard diving

TOKYO (AP) — Chinese teammates Shi Tingmao and Wang Han finished 1-2 Friday in the preliminaries of Olympic women’s 3-meter springboard diving.

Shi totaled 350.45 points for her five dives, followed closely by Wang with 347.25. The two already teamed up to win the 3-meter synchro event.

The 3-meter springboard is the first individual diving event of the Tokyo Games.

A three-time Olympic gold medalist, the 29-year-old Shi is going for her second straight individual gold on the springboard and looking to extend Chinese dominance of the women’s event.

They have won 3-meter gold at every Olympics since the 1984 Los Angeles Games, a winning streak that covers the last eight Olympics.

Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware of Canada claimed the next two spots in the standings, followed by Sayaka Mikami of Japan and Hailey Hernandez of the United States.

The top 18 advance to Saturday’s semifinals at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

American diver Krysta Palmer moved on with a 15th-place showing. The scores are wiped clean for the semifinals, which will determine the 12 finalists.

The medal round is set for Sunday.
