The York Lions Stadium renovation is complete with FIFA certified turf and a year-round air dome

TORONTO — The York Lions Stadium has completed its $8.2 million renovations and officially opened on July 31st. Originally a track and field stadium constructed for the 2015 Panam games, the York Lions Stadium has been converted into a turf field to allow for a larger variety of uses.

The renovations began in August 2020 and stayed on schedule to reopen in 2021, doing so officially on July 31st, hosting a Canadian Premier League match, between the York Region “York9” FC and the Hamilton Forge FC.

York9 FC suffered a loss, but they now have a permanent state-of-the-art stadium to call home. The turf used for this project is Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)–quality turf, making it an internationally certified stadium.

The stadium was built to function year-round using an air dome solution, allowing for sports to be held throughout the winter, whereas previously the stadium was off-limits starting November and reopening April or as late as May.

In addition to giving York9 FC a home, the project was an investment to improve the experience of the YorkU athletes, some of which are participating in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This renovated venue further improves the prospect of Toronto generating high-quality athletes as it expects its infrastructure and capacity for training and hosting.
