Racine Raiders game suspended due to severe weather

RACINE, Wis. (BVM) – The lightning was the only thing that could stop the Racine Raiders Saturday night.

The Raiders’ Mid-States Football League (MSFL) game versus the Chi City Ducks Saturday night at Horlick Field was suspended in the third quarter because of severe weather.

Racine held a 19-0 lead with 9:29 left to play in the third quarter when it was announced that the game would be delayed for 30 minutes because of lightning.

After the delay clock was reset three more times because of lighting being spotted, it was decided that the game would be suspended. The decision came 22 minutes after the first delay was announced.

Raiders president Matt Nelson, who is also the president of the MSFL, said the teams and league will make a decision on the game sometime this week.

“We had a lot of lightning strikes to the north that were pretty wicked and we didn’t want anyone to get hurt,” Nelson said. “In order for it to be a complete game, there’s a time limit. So we have to figure that out.”

The Raiders (8-3, 6-2 MSFL) looked impressive for all 35-minutes, as it appeared they were on their way to a victory after suffering two consecutive losses.

Racine Quarterback – Mitchell Farr, who was benched a week earlier in a 27-12 loss to the Midway Marauders, came back strong. Farr threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers.

Farr threw a 23-yard touchdown to wide-receiver Joe Garcia, giving the Raiders a 6-0 lead with 13:16 left in the second quarter.

On the Ducks next offensive possession, Quarterback – RJ Matucci was intercepted by Deveron Davis, allowing the Raiders to take over in Ducks territory.

Following the interception, Farr threw a 24-yard touchdown to wide-receiver Will Norwood, Farr’s second touchdown pass of the night. The Raiders increased their lead over Chi City 13-0 with 10:39 in the second quarter.

After a Raiders fumble recovery from defensive-back DiQuan McRae, Farr threw his third touchdown of the night, a 42-yard touchdown to wide-receiver Jordan Payne. Racine now held a 19-0 lead with 13:49 remaining in the third quarter.

Shortly after, the game was delayed and eventually suspended.

The Raiders, currently an injury riddled team, made some offensive adjustments entering the game.

The Raiders used a single-back offense with four-receiver sets most of the contest because leading rusher Howard Triplett and other ball carriers remain out with injuries.

In addition, starting middle linebacker Deveron Davis served as the punter Saturday because of an injury to T.J. Hearn.

“Due to all the injuries we had, I’m definitely happy with the way the offense performed,” Raiders associate head coach Anthony Wooden said. “A lot of guys stepped up. We played with the mentality ‘next man up.’”

Racine is scheduled to close out their regular season Saturday with a road game against the Lincoln-Way Patriots.

No decision has been made yet on the outcome or completion of the game versus Chi City.

“If it’s not a complete game, we’ll have to do a postponement or at least start at the point where this ended and finish the game,” Nelson said.
