Jenna Merk, Academic All-Canadian and an embodiment of hard work

REGINA, Saskatchewan — University of Regina Cougars women’s hockey forward, Jenna Merk, was born on February 20, 2000, in Regina, Saskatchewan in Canada. The 5’6″ (168 cm) left shooter weighs 59 kg (130 lbs) and has played different sports such as softball, basketball, soccer, karate, rugby, dance, football, and hockey.

Jenna’s family comes from a sports-loving family that encourages her to be actively involved in different sports. Her hockey career started in Hockey Regina Inc. when she was just four years old. However, unlike most Cougars, she completed her entire minor hockey career in a single local minor hockey association and has since continued to play hockey as a primary sport.

Her first league was in 2013 when she joined the Regina Ravens for 21 games in the 2013/2014 South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League (SSFHL) (W) and 4 games in the playoffs. She scored 6 goals and 11 assists, making a total of 17 points that season. The following season (2014/2015), she participated in the same league and earned 9 goals, 20 assists, and 29 points in 28 games played. Altogether, she played 49 regular-season games with the Regina Ravens and scored 15 goals with 31 assists and 46 points.

During the 2014/2015 season, Merk joined the Regina Rebels at the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League (W) for 8 games. Even though she didn’t score any goal that season, she returned for 2015/2016 SFMAAAHL (W) for 28 games and earned 7 goals, 10 assists, and 17 points. The 2016/2017 season with Regina Rebels at the league was an improvement as she played 28 games and earned 11 goals, 20 assists, and 31 points. For her last season with the Rebels (2017/2018), Jenny played another 28 games, where she scored 14 goals with 22 assists and 36 points. In total, she played 92 season games with the Regina Rebels and earned 32 goals, 52 assists, and 84 points.

In 2017, the Regina Rebels announced that Jenna had completed her season and was moving to the University of Regina to play for the U of R Cougars. Her accomplishments with the Regina Rebels include Rebels Rookie of the Year and Leadership Award, Sask First Top 42 in the U16 and U18 summer camps, which spanned 4 years, and Team Sask U16.

After moving to the University of Regina, she played 28 games for the Cougars at the 2018/2019 USports (W) league and had 1 goal, 2 assists, and 3 points. She played 26 games in the 2019/2020 season and scored the lone goal for the Regina Cougars in the shootout to secure her team’s two-point victory against the Lethbridge Pronghorns. So far, the young athlete has a total of 2 goals, 2 assists, and 4 points earned at 54 games. The leftie was named Academic All-Canadian for the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons.

She recently served as one of the West Female Hockey Academy (WFHA) instructors alongside Bailey McMaster and Emma Waldenberger.

Jenna is great at managing her time and balancing playing hockey with her class activities. She is also involved in some community services and recently presented Red Cross Anti-bullying courses for the female hockey teams in Hockey Regina. As an embodiment of hard work, she encourages younger players to put in the work and enjoy the memories they make with their team members.
