Baseball is a way of life for Mike Flax of Clearview HS

MULLICA HILL, N.J. — When Michael “Mike” Flax began his senior year at Clearview Regional High School last month, he also became a part of the boys varsity baseball team for his fourth consecutive year. Not only has Mike competed at the high school level, but he has also played baseball for over a decade in local little league and on travel teams including the Heat and Young Guns. Mike is a fantastic team play that shows his support for his teammates on and off the field. He excels in the classroom (even remote). Mike always puts 110% into everything he does. I recently had a one-on-one with Mike Flax to learn more about him both on and off the field.

Q: What are your personal goals with baseball?
A: To play and compete at the highest level I can.

Q: What’s the biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?
A: The biggest challenge in baseball is the mental aspect. You have to be able to have a bad game and forget it ever happened two hours later.

Q: What was the best advice you were ever given?
A: Play every game like it’s your last because you never know when it really will be the last one. You must promise yourself that no matter how hard it gets, you must never give up on your dreams.

Q: What do you love about your sport?
A: What I love about baseball is that there are always games to play inside an actual game. Whether that be seeing how fast you can run onto the field or see which one of your teammates can hit the ball the furthest, it always helps us play loose and have more fun.

Q: Do you plan to play in college?
A: Playing in college has always been a dream of mine, and it’s something I’m working to be able to do every day.

Q: What do you like to do outside of baseball?
A: I like to hang out with friends, lift, and play video games.

Q: How would you describe your personality?
A: I would describe myself as energetic, funny, motivated, and open-minded.

Q: What is your favorite snack food?
A: Fritos Honey BBQ flavor twists.

Q: What is your favorite song or music artist to get you ready for a game?
A: Lil Baby or J Cole.

Q: Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?
A: I always put certain items of clothing on before the run in the exact same order every time. For example, the left cleat always goes on before the right cleat, but the right cleat gets tied first.

Q: What has being a member of a team-taught you?
A: It has taught me leadership skills, social skills, focus, and numerous life lessons that people who never played a team sport would lack.
