Satellite High football takes little rest after historic prior season success

SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — The 2020 Satellite High Scorpion Football Program enjoyed a long list of season accomplishments which included an undefeated regular season and highest winning percentage in program history, a MaxPreps Top 100 State ranking, and a Brevard County Top 4 ranking. The varsity program picked up their first win over Melbourne Central Catholic in team history along with their first win against Merritt Island in 26 years.  The junior varsity ended with a 3-0 record which included a big 7-6 win over Viera. The varsity program recorded the best point differential in over 50 years — +201 differential: 296 points scored (37 per game) to only 95 points allowed (12 per game). They also recorded the best turnover differential in 50+ years — 26 turnovers caused and only 5 turnovers allowed.

The Scorps didn’t rest long on the success of 2020. After all, the mantra is “this season doesn’t care about last season”. Early in the Winter it was announced that Satellite Football was entering district football again and will no longer be classified as an Independent. They are now in the 5A Region 2 District 8 with Bayside, Merritt Island, Palm Bay, Rockledge, and Titusville and will now compete for a playoff berth.

Winter continued with academic success along with gains in the weight room. Players participated in multiple sports including soccer, baseball, wrestling, lacrosse, and track & field. The Scorpion football program also kicked off a “Red Dawn” Program, where the football players woke up at the crack of dawn to attend morning workouts in the gym, or at the field or beach. In addition, many participated in speed training at UbrZati. They also had a very successful Lift-A-Thon which raised record setting donations for new equipment, facility upgrades, and to help with the normal season expenses.

The Spring Football Season kicked off April 26th and continued for four weeks. Spring Football also allowed for incoming freshman to participate to introduce them to the culture of Satellite Football. May 7th, the Scorps had their annual Red/White Intersquad game where the players were chosen by each team captain. The game captains were twin brothers Gage Malkin (Team Red) and Chase Malkin (Team White). The rising 9th graders were able to suit up and play one quarter after two weeks of football practice. The intersquad game had an exciting finish where it came down to a 4th down and long decision to attempt a 32 yard field goal with 27 seconds left in the ball game.

The finale for the Spring Season was a jamboree played May 21st where Satellite hosted Melbourne Central Catholic along with Heritage (Palm Bay). Each of the three teams played each other for two quarters in a scrimmage atmosphere. In their first two quarter game, Satellite lost to Heritage 14-0 but turned around with a two quarter win over MCC with 28-0 score. Despite the windy conditions, it was a good night for the football staff to evaluate players on the roster.

The Summer Football season kicked off after a two week break following exams. Satellite Football had over one hundred players participating in the workouts. They have also welcomed new members moving into the area to attend the school this Fall. A handful of players participated in college football camps across the state. Satellite Football participated in 7v7 tournaments along with a scheduled road trip to Georgia in late July to practice and compete with other high school teams.

They continued their speed training at UbrZatil and the first games of the 2021 season were away games scheduled for August 20 and 27. The next home games will take place at 7pm on September 3  and 24.  Away games are at 7pm on September 10 at Melbourne HS, September 17 at Titusville,  and October 1 at Bayside-Palm Bay.  Go Scorps!
