Canadian multi-sport athlete Georgia Simmerling retires

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Georgia Simmerling, a 32-year-old Canadian multi-sport athlete, has announced her retirement from professional sport. She was Canada’s first Olympian to take part in three different sports items across three different games in 2016.

Simmerling is wrapping up her career after her final competition at the Tokyo Olympics and she earned a fourth-place finish on the Canadian women’s cycling team.

In a media release, she said, “I personally left the Tokyo Games feeling very satisfied with how I rode and had absolutely no regrets. I felt ready to close this chapter of my life. All I can say for now is it’s time to invest in women’s sports.”

She made her debut as an alpine skier at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

She won a silver medal in the team pursuit at the 2016 World Championship and won a bronze medal in team pursuit cycling at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

She finished fourth in the team pursuit cycling event and represented Canada at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

A fighter, despite being continually troubled by injuries, the talented competitor added track cycling to her arsenal in 2015 which gave her a supreme rise in the sport.

In the following winter sports season, she secured herself a place in PyeongChang. But unfortunately, she did not make it to the games. She had sustained a severe crash that broke her legs.

After retiring from ski cross, Simmerling took up cycling and won silver at Rio.

According to sources, she intends to move to Europe with her fiancé Stephanie Labbe.

In an Instagram post, she said, “Sport has been my entire life. And I couldn’t be more grateful for where it has brought me, who I have met, and the experiences I’ve had.”
