Campion Grads Rugby Club – 45 Years of forming bonds of friendship that last a lifetime

REGINA, Saskatchewan — The Campion Grads Rugby Club is based in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Established in 1976, the Club holds the record as 17 times Men’s Division 1 Provincial Champion. For 45 years now and still counting, Campion Grads Rugby Club has featured in the Canadian Prairies.

Campion Grads was established to meet three needs:

  1. Meet the demand of many Canadians around Regina who are developing interest in the game of rugby.
  2. Foster continuity in making the Campion College High School their color popular in Regina and beyond.
  3. To create a unique style of play in the game of rugby.

In the course of 45 years, the founding fathers of the Club can say they are moving in the right direction. The Campion Grads Club won many first and second-division city titles in addition to the 17 Men’s Division 1 Provincial Championships mentioned earlier. In addition, it has produced players that have gone pro.

With their motto being “Community Class Commitment,” they believe that the combinations of these three words will be a guide that will help shape the decisions and actions of all young stars that will pass through the Club when they are on the pitch and off the pitch.

They take the community’s role in each of their lives very seriously, which explains why the Club strives to build the community around them. However, they hope to do so with respect, honesty, and consideration when it comes to interactions. For them, all Grads are like family. Hence, they provide equal opportunities for players of all abilities to become better.

More so, the Club has produced notable players over the years. For example, Scott Franklin was a Campion Grads player when studying at the University of Victoria before going pro. He was born on 23rd August 1980, in Regina, Saskatchewan. On July 8, 2011, Franklin was announced as one of the five pro players representing Canada at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The Campion Grads Rugby Club has made a name for themselves in the game of rugby. In 2014, they were well represented at the Saskatchewan Rugby Union Awards. Club members were nominated in different categories: Builder of the year – Steve Fairburn, Coach of the year – Peni Lutu, and Male player of the year – Wade Lavalle. Out of the three nominations, the grads went on to win two – the Coach of the Year Award and the Male Player of the Year Award.

No other rugby team went home with two awards except the Grads, and they won in one of the most contested categories.

These awards meant a lot to the Campion Grads Rugby Club.

Although they lost this year’s Provincial Men’s Division 1 city finals to the Regina Rogues, who beat them 45-37 at the Regina Rugby Club Field on Sept. 11, they played well and look forward to doing better next season.

As the Grads will always say, “Our members form the bonds of friendship that last a lifetime…”
