Seattle football fans await Huling Bowl every year

SEATTLE — The West Seattle rivalry game between West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth High School football, known as the Huling Bowl, appears to be more for the community than the out-and-out rivalry.

Although their name has been long removed as a sponsor for the two nearby schools, the Huling family, once known for their local chain of auto dealerships, is still heavily involved in these activities and education. The name for the game and trophy came from Steve Huling, a Chief Sealth gradute of the Class of 1965.

He has lived in Seattle since he was born. He was interviewed about the origin of the Huling Bowl at the house on Eskrine Way, where he was brought up. He went to Sealth and some of his cousins to West Seattle High School. His best friend, who also graduated in 1965, also went to West Seattle High School. In Seattle, this happens a lot that friends or relatives had different schools, and it was known to be a ‘blended family.’

During the interview, Huling said, “Our family has always been particularly interested in education and youth and helping the community. It’s kind of what we do.”

It started in 2002 when Huling and his family were asked to attract people to the game by the leadership of two schools, although he wasn’t sure about why the match was a draw. Parents of those two schools asked them if they could get a trophy for the teams. It continued until 2007, and the following year community asked if it would happen again or not. And this was it, the Huling Bowl happened in 2008. After that, it happened every year, and every year, there was a considerable increase in the crowd.

Huling and his brother were into sports. Huling used to swim and was on a swim team. His brother was into football and also basketball.

Steve loves to be around kids and is part of high school programs such as marketing mentorship. With the Huling bowl, there are certain events nd both brothers have been part of the SSCC foundation for years, raising so much money for the sports at schools.

Now the Huling Bowl is happening this Friday, Sept. 17, and everyone is super excited about that; there will be a massive crowd at South West Athletic Complex (SWAC) at 7:00 pm.
