Deerfield Beach defensive showcase leads to victory over Stoneman Douglas

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — Deerfield Beach’s defense proved to be too much for Stoneman Douglas to handle on Friday as they held them to only two points in the 29-2 victory in Parkland. The Bucks finished the game with eight sacks and had five tackles for loss in the dominating win over Stoneman Douglas.

Deerfield Beach came out of the gates hot. Stoneman Douglas running back Matt Wilson put the Eagles in scoring position on the opening kickoff after taking it all the way to the Bucks’ 12-yard line. Deerfield Beach responded by securing the first of the three turnovers they would have in the game. Xavier Lucas intercepted a pass from Ryan Spallina, stopping the Eagles from scoring on the opening drive and swinging the momentum of the game in favor of the Bucks.

The Bucks capitalized on this momentum by getting on the board with a 23-yard field goal from Peyton Giersbrook. Deerfield Beach then scored again after Cortez Julmisl recovered a botched snap in the endzone.

The Bucks’ defense made it extremely difficult for Stoneman Douglas to move the ball all game, as second-string quarterback Hunter Rose had trouble finding a rhythm and getting the Eagles into scoring position. The Eagles offense struggled throughout the game, totaling only 64 yards of offense against the Bucks’ staunch defense.

The Eagles managed to get into the redzone only three times during the matchup, with Deerfield Beach forcing a turnover each time. The lone score by the Eagles came from a safety in the third quarter.

Deerfield Beach was able to continue the success on the other side of the ball as well, adding touchdowns on a 42-yard run by Joseph Kennerly and two touchdowns from Michael Merdinger to Tastean Reddicks. Iowa commit and senior running back Jazium Patterson proved to be a problem for the Eagles defense throughout the game, rushing 18 times and totaling 124 yards on the ground.

While Deerfield Beach was able to win this game quite handily, it has not been all smooth sailing for the team this season. The Bucks have faced adversity this season after former head coach Jevon Glenn stepped down for personal reasons on Sept. 8. Although the team has found ways to win since this loss, winning two games in a row and outscoring their opponents 99-2 in that span.

Deerfield Beach will look to continue this success on Friday in a non-district matchup against the Rockledge Raiders.
