Utah to open 2022 season on the road against Florida

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Utah confirmed Wednesday that it will begin the 2022 football season on the road against the Florida Gators.

The game is set for Sept. 3, 2022 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida. With a capacity of 88,548 people and a passionate Gator fanbase, “The Swamp” is often considered one of the top atmospheres in college football.

“Mark your calendars and buy your plane tickets,” the Utah Football Twitter account tweeted Wednesday. “We’re heading to Florida on September 3, 2022!”

While the Gators haven’t had championship-level success since former Utah coach Urban Meyer’s departure from the program following the 2010 season, Florida has been ranked in the top 25 of the AP Poll at some point in every season since 1979, with the exception of 2014. Florida is currently ranked No. 11 in the AP Poll.

Utah and Florida have met just one time in history, a 1977 matchup won by Florida, 38-29.

Florida will also travel to Rice-Eccles Stadium during the 2023 non-conference slate, though that date has yet to be announced. The rest of Utah’s 2022 non-conference schedule includes home games against Southern Utah and San Diego State.
