Enjoying rep softball from behind the plate

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia — Gianna Dyck is a typical 12-year-old girl. She loves her family, her friends and probably, most importantly, her two cats Clifford and Cruz. In her six years of living in Abbotsford, she has also found a love, a joy and a passion for playing rep softball. Rep ball, for those of you who don’t know, is about playing on a team that is competitive in nature, but is also focused on developing fundamental skills. Gianna will tell you that being behind the plate as a back catcher is the only place to be. “You’re a part of every play when you’re a catcher,” she says. And boy is she ever! After every game and every practice she comes home beaten up, tired and covered in dirt. She dusts herself off, cleans herself up and paints her nails while she patiently awaits her next crouch behind the plate.
