Led by QB Sims, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets sting North Carolina

ATLANTA — In his third season at the helm of the program, head coach Geoff Collins entered Saturday still in search of a signature win at Georgia Tech. Collins and his staff have put forth a tremendous effort to build the Yellow Jackets up since he was originally hired in December of 2018. It all paid off this past weekend with a dominant 45-22 upset of No. 21 North Carolina; the school’s first victory against a ranked opponent since 2017.

The Yellow Jackets were impressive on both sides of the ball in this contest, but the top story was the reemergence of second-year quarterback Jeff Sims. Sims had been ailing since a season-opening loss  to Northern Illinois back on Sep. 4 and watched teammate Jordan Yates essentially take over the top spot behind center the past few weeks.

Sims very likely claimed the starting QB role back, probably for good, with his dynamic performance Saturday night.

With the Yellow Jackets down 7-6 late in the second quarter, Sims entered the game and wasted no time going to work against the North Carolina defense. He scrambled for an 11-yard touchdown on his first drive and would go on to total 128 yards and three scores on the ground. In addition to that, Sims completed 10-of-13 passes for 112 yards and another touchdown.

Perhaps the most important development for Sims was his protection of the football which has been a past problem for him. Sims and the Yellow Jackets offense did not commit a single turnover Saturday.

In his postgame presser, Coach Collins had this to say about his young QB. “He (Sims) stayed ready” and “got hot.” Collins went on to say that the Yellow Jackets now have to “turn the page and get ready to play another really good opponent.”

That opponent is yet another ACC divisional foe, as the Yellow Jackets will host Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 2. Kickoff for that matchup is noon EST.
