Q&A with Saskatchewan 13-year-old Carter Hudyma

MOOSE JAW, Saskatchewan — My name is Carter Hudyma. I am 13 years old and I am going into Grade 8. I went to Westmount my whole elementary years accept for this coming year I am actually going to Notre Dame in Wilcox.

What sports do you compete in? How/why did you start?

I play hockey. I have since I was four years old. My older brother Haydn played and I always played with him in my basement and my grandparents basement. I was obsessed with having a hockey stick every where I went. I just got into motocross last year when we were in the pandemic because hockey wasn’t able to run and dirt biking was allowed. When we found out hockey wasn’t happening actually for spring season a family friend introduced us into dirt biking. I started on riding a 50cc bike which is like a beginner bike. At the start that’s how new I was. I ended up loving it and went to a 65cc bike which was the first one my parent bought me. I didn’t end up riding that very long and then we got a 85cc and that’s what I am still riding. I do a lot of races during the summer all over Saskatchewan which is fun.

What type of achievement have you accomplished already?

I have accomplished a lot more than I ever thought I would in dirt biking. I never thought I would ever race against people and I have got a few plaques during the past year and a little bit. I have a second place and a few fifth places in two different circuits. In hockey my first big accomplishment was making the Brick Team (It’s a huge deal to make this team. Kids from all over Saskatchewan tried out). That was a lot of fun once I made the team, but very hard to try to make it in the beginning. I got to travel a lot. We went to the USA, had a big tournament there and we also got to play at the West Edmonton Mall. That was really neat but also I was nervous with all the people watching. I ended up getting to be picked for a second star one game which was also very exciting. I now am going to Notre Dame this year. First year and I’m excited to see who I become and see what my hockey skill will be.

What are you goals in these sports?

My goals with dirt biking is to be in Loretta Lynn’s in the state’s one day (the world’s largest amateur motocross race which takes place in Tennessee). That’s my big goal. Otherwise, goals each year is for me to get better and more skilled to race and end up with more plaques. I’d love to meet McNabb one day. He’s a professional young rider. He is like a role model for me. Hockey goal for me would be to develop and maybe get a scholarship for school. And obviously the NHL is my big goal like most other hockey kids.

What do you love about these sports?

My favourite thing about dirt biking to me is that it’s a one on one sport. I call it “my happy place”. I get to just ride and think about whatever. If I don’t do good that’s on me, but if I do go that is also on me. I don’t have to worry about nothing else. Hockey I just love. I always have it’s been my passion since I was little when my older brother played and I knew I wanted to also.

Advice to others interested in starting?

I would say just try it. If you think you would like that sport. Like me I never ever thought of riding dirt bikes and racing and now I love it.
