Tiger golf team off to a great start in 2021

MARIETTA, Ohio – The boys golf team at Marietta High School is off to an exciting start to the 2021 season. A 72-4 record to begin the campaign, a school record individual 18 hole round, a pair of Washington County championships, and a great showing at a tournament in Columbus highlight what has been an eventful beginning to the year.

The season started with a victory at the Circle K Invitational at Eaglesticks. The team shot 300 with scoring efforts coming from Grayson Herb (74), Logan Offenberger (79), and Aidan Herb (81). The lowest effort, however, came from AJ Graham with a school record round of 66, surpassing the 67 from Andy Wentis that had stood since 1980.

The next day they were in Jackson for the Viking Tee Off Classic. With a team score of 327 they were bested by Belpre, one of only 4 teams to finish ahead of them in any match or tournament thus far. Team scoring came from AJ Graham (73), Logan Offenberger (83), Webb Hall (83), and a trio of 88’s via Aidan Herb, Luke Baumgard, and Eli Gardner.

The next tournament was the Jukebox Pizza Invitational with another first place finish and a team score of 307. Leading the way was AJ Graham as the tournament medalist with a 68, followed by scoring efforts by Grayson Herb (79), Aidan Herb (79), and Liam Ritter (81).

The team had a top to bottom display at the Washington County Championships. The varsity group won its 18 hole tournament with a 314. Counting in the scoring were AJ Graham (74), Grayson Herb (78), Logan Offenberger (80), and Liam Ritter (82). The JV’s also captured the county title with a 9 hole score of 187. Scoring for the squad were Webb Hall (41), Ethan Gault (48), Ben Pfeiffer (48), and Canyon Herb (50).

Most recently, the Tigers played in the Warrior Invitational at Cumberland Trails. Surrounded by teams from larger cities they shot 315 to finish fourth, bested by only Grove City, Dublin Jerome, and Newark Central Catholic. Scoring efforts for this tournament were contributed by AJ Graham (74), Liam Ritter (77), Grayson Herb (79), and Aidan Herb (85).

With the season off to a strong start, the Tigers are looking at a number of possibilities ahead for them. The first step is an attempt to secure an ECOL championship as they are trailing by four strokes and prepare for a shootout with Dover, New Philadelphia, and Warren coming up to decide the final league title before the conference dissolves. After that, the focus switches to the post-season with an eye on a state tournament birth, the first for the team since 1986.

Current Varsity record is 72-4
Current JV record 6-0
