Aisea Moa, Zion Steptoe decommit from Utah football

SALT LAKE CITY — In the past week, two Class of 2022 football commits have announced their decommitments from the Utah football program.

On Thursday, four-star defensive lineman Aisea Moa announced he was reopening his recruitment, and on Monday, wide receiver Zion Steptoe announced he would also be heading in another direction.

Moa, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound lineman from Weber High School in Ogden, originally picked the Utes over Oregon State, BYU, Colorado State and Utah State, according to 247Sports.

He thanked Utah defensive line coaches Lewis Powell and Sione Po’uha and the rest of the program’s staff on Twitter.

“First, I would like to thank the entire University of Utah staff for the opportunity to be a part of [their] program, especially to coach Powell and coach Po’uha,” he tweeted. “But after some long conversations with my parents and my heavenly father I have decided to decommit from the University of Utah and reopen my recruitment !!”

He noted that his offer was not pulled or dropped.

Moa, rated by 247Sports as the state of Utah’s fourth-best player and No. 39 in the country among defensive linemen, hasn’t yet set up any visits but has been in contact with Miami, BYU, Oregon State, Baylor, Tennessee, UCLA and Boise State coaches, he told 247Sports last week, adding that he plans to sign in December.

The class of 2022 also lost another signee on Monday when Steptoe, a wide receiver from Memorial High School in Frisco, Texas, announced he would be decommiting as well.

Steptoe is rated as a three-star player by 247Sports.

According to 247Sports, he had 22 college offers, including Purdue, Kansas, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Pittsburgh and Syracuse.

He visited Utah on June 11 and committed on June 18. He was recruited by Utah wide receivers coach Chad Bumphis, according to 247Sports.

“Thank you to the entire coaching staff at Utah, especially Coach Bumphis, for the opportunity to be a Ute,” he wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to all the Utah family for embracing me. However, after many discussions with my family and others close to me, I have decided to decommit from the University of Utah. This was not an easy decision. I wish nothing but the best for the team.”
